Dicycloverine Hydrochloride

Indications

Dicycloverine is used to treat the following conditions:

• Irritable bowel syndrome/functional bowel syndrome
• Urinary incontinence as a result of a weakened detrusor muscle
• Colic in children
• spasms in the gastrointestinal tract
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Diverticulitis
• Colic in the abdomen

Pharmacology

Antispasmodic and anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) properties of dicycloverine hydrochloride It's a 2-(diethylammo) ethyl ester, hydrochloride of [Bicyclohexyl-]1-carboxylic acid. Smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal system are relieved with dicycloverine. Dicycloverine HCl Injection is an intramuscular injection of a sterile, pyrogen-free aqueous solution (Not For Intravenous Use). It acts on cholinergic (or muscarinic) receptors found on the gut's involuntary muscle. Dicycloverine inhibits the interaction of some substances produced by the body with these receptors by binding to them. The stomach muscle will relax as a result of this.

Dosage & Administration

For oral dosage forms:

• Adults:10 to 20 mg three times a day.
• Children over 6 months of age: 5 to 10 mg three times a day.

For injectable dosage form:

• Adults: Intramuscular injection. Not for intravenous use. The recommended intramuscular dose is 80 mg daily (in 4 equally divided doses).

Oral dicycloverine Hydrochloride should be started as soon as possible and the intramuscular form should not be used for periods longer than 1 or 2 days.

Children: Dose must be determined by the doctor.

Side Effects

Insomnia, mydriasis, cycloplegia, increased ocular tension, urinary hesitancy, palpitations, and dyspnea are some of the symptoms that can occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Classification B. In animal studies, dicycloverine was neither teratogenic nor embryocidal. It, like other medications, should only be taken during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. There is no information on the drug's release into breast milk. In the case of a lactating mother, dicycloverine should be administered with caution.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with autonomic neuropathy, hepatic or renal disease, ulcerative colitis, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac tachyarrhythmia, hiatal hernia, or known or suspected prostatic enlargement should use this medication with caution.
